Best AI tools under $20/month in 2026 — the ones actually worth it

I pay for 7 AI subscriptions. Only 4 earn their keep. Here's the honest breakdown of which $20/mo tools are worth it and which are coasting.

I've been on every major AI subscription at some point in the last 18 months. Right now I pay for ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro, Cursor Pro, Perplexity Pro, ElevenLabs, Notion AI, and GitHub Copilot. That's about $140/month. Only four of them I'd renew if I were starting over.

Worth every penny

Claude Pro ($20/mo). I use this for code and long-form writing. The 200k context window means I can paste an entire codebase and ask for changes. Output quality on technical writing is the best of any model right now. If you write or code daily, this is a no-brainer.

Cursor Pro ($20/mo). VSCode with AI baked in. The 'Composer' feature where you describe a change and it edits multiple files is genuinely transformative. Pair this with Claude Pro and you have most of what makes 'AI coding' useful.

Perplexity Pro ($20/mo). I've nearly stopped using Google. Perplexity gives me sourced answers in 5 seconds. The 'Spaces' feature for organising recurring research queries is underrated. If you research anything for a living, this pays for itself by hour two.

ChatGPT Plus ($20/mo). I'd skip this if you have Claude — but the voice mode and image gen are unique enough that I keep both. Voice mode for walks is genuinely useful (I dictate emails while walking). DALL-E for quick concept art.

Cancellable

Notion AI ($10/mo). Only worth it if you live in Notion. The Q&A across your workspace is the killer feature, but if you're not already a heavy Notion user, the productivity gain doesn't materialise.

GitHub Copilot Pro ($10/mo). I keep it for muscle memory, but honestly Cursor + Claude has eaten its lunch. If you're already paying for Cursor, drop Copilot.

ElevenLabs Creator ($22/mo). Brilliant for specific projects (audiobooks, podcast intros, e-learning narration). But for most people, the free tier is enough — only upgrade when a paying project demands it.

Not worth it for most

Jasper, Copy.ai, Writesonic (all ~$40-50/mo). Marketing-team tools. If you're an individual creator, ChatGPT Plus + a custom GPT does 90% of the same job at half the price.

The under-$20 winners list

  • GitHub Copilot — $10/mo, only if you don't use Cursor
  • Notion AI — $10/mo, only if you live in Notion
  • ChatGPT Plus — $20/mo, the safe default
  • Claude Pro — $20/mo, the best one for serious work
  • Cursor Pro — $20/mo, mandatory if you code
  • Perplexity Pro — $20/mo, replaces Google
